The only one calculator you'll ever need
Why would you buy a 1980's calculator? Because it provides the best combination of form and function. While other calculators have gone high-end and become curiosities of mathematics and graphics, HP's customers do not want to let go of the 12-C, despite the fact that HP has more powerful calculators at a slightly larger price. Here's why I think: Just the right set of features. The average Joe using a financial calculator needs no more than the HP-12C provides. Sturdy and strong. The keys have a wonderful feel. Fits in a shirt pocket. Very reliable. They've had two decades to iron out any bugs. Large user base. Most financial courses will use this as the calculator of choiceBuy this calculator, if you need a financial calculator. You will not regret it -- I daresay that it will still be around when your kids need their own calculators.

Sturdy Workhorse
I've been using this calculator so long, over fifteen years, that I can't imagine working without it. When I bought this thing it was alone in the field of financial calculators and the 12C is still the standard by which other calculators are judged. It has become the standard "tool of the trade" for financial professional types. I have a senior position with a leading money management firm and I require all of my financial analysts to learn how to master this tool. Learning to master the functions is like taking a review course in finance. The calculator can be used for a variety of financial functions including calendar (day count), interest, cash flow, IRR, compounding, NPV, standard deviation, weighted average, simple programming and more. The calculator is nearly indestructible which can be very handy when a trade goes against you and the calculator is suddenly flying across a trading room. The calculator has a nice form factor, the buttons are easy to use, it...

A workhorse calculator at a great price. Anyone can use it.
Calculators may seem a bit "dated" in this age of Palm Pilots and PC's, but when you have to do a lot of calculations and you don't have a spreadsheet on a laptop handy, a good calculator is invaluable. If you calculate mortgages, compound interest, amortization or any of the common functions in finance on a regular basis, you can't go wrong with this classic calculator, long a standard of the industry. The 120 built-in functions are easy to use and well explained by the manual. Don't see a function you need? You can enter your own mathematical function, too.If you DON'T do financial calculations regularly, but are in school for anything but science, this is also a great choice. You can even learn a lot about financial calculations just from the manual. (For science students and scientists, HP makes a scientific version calculator with statistical functions instead of financial ones.)If you are a regular person looking for a calculator, I REALLY...

If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.

The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.

In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner

A worthy successor of the classic HP12c is finally unleashed
The HP12c Platinum 25th Anniversary Edition (HP12cPAE) is the 2006 special commemorative limited edition model and the second official upgrade of the original HP12C. The HP12c Platinum (HP12cP version 1.0) has been improved since its released in 2003. Although the HP12cPAE is based on the HP12cP version 2.0,it would has its historical place as the 4th model in the HP12C lineage since 1981 and may be unofficially designated as HP12c Platinum version 3.0.FIRST LOOK AND FEEL. HP has showcased this upgrade with an overall quality in both the looks and feel department. The "new" retro-styling and colours of the HP12cPAE closely resembles the exterior of the silver plated HP11C, a made in the 1980s HP scientific calculator cousin of the gold HP12C. As a bonus, HP had made this a special purchase for the fans and new owners by including a nice black 25th anniversary "PDA" style leather pouch with the HP12cPAE. The overall construction is firm and solid and the improved keypad...

Nice, overall, but PLEASE HP bring back the quality!
There's been many a good review on this calculator previously on Amazon so I won't delve too deeply into what has already been said. I will, however, off a few opinions that are gleaned fromm over two decades worth of using financial calculators, so I hope someone finds this interesting.First, there are only three 'true' manufacturers of financial calculators: HP, Texas Instruments and Calculated Industries. Well, four if you count everyone else. But, HP & TI own the student and financial market. TI's calculators use the Algebraic Operating System (AOS) and HP uses RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) and some (the HP-12c platinum reviewed here) offer both. It's a matter of personal choice; RPN is more fluid once you learn it, but AOS is easier and flows math as you were taught in school. That said, once you master RPN, you won't go back to AOS.Secondly, and this is my big beef with ALL calculator manufacturers. Handheld calculators need TACTILE feedback;...

Advantages and disadvantages.
Many people wonder: Should I get the HP 12c Platinum or the old standby, the HP 12c gold. Personally, I'd recommend getting both. Like most things, each model has advantages and disadvantages, but both are still among the finest feats in engineering in terms of a calculator. Keep in mind there are two versions of the Platinum -- the original and the 2.0 version. The 2.0 version is much better, and you'll know you have it if it has backspace and undo [g] functions. It's finally a respectible "upgrade" to one of the best calculators ever made. What about the 12c Platinum?Advantages:- Much, much faster than the gold. It crunches IRR calculations in a fraction of the time. You might even find yourself missing the "running" message that's so common with the gold HP 12c. You cannot overestimate the advantage of the increase in speed, especially with test taking.- Backspace and undo key. Having a backspace key really is nice, especially if you...

Updated Version of the BEST FINANCIAL CALCULATOR
This new "II" version is a newer style of the older HP-10B, which will now go out of production. The new style has a smoother case and a more 21st century look, but the calculator and its functions are still the same.I have used (and own) many of the available financial calculators on the market. I "recommend" the HP-10B to my university finance students, both graduate and undergraduate. The HP 10B-II is a directly positioned competitor to the TI-BA-II+, but HP's entry is superior. The keys feel more solid, the machine itself "seems" better made. Having worn out more than one of each, my experience has been that the HP has more staying power. And, the TI-BA-II+ often requires more keystrokes to accomplish the same tasks (i.e., NPV calculations). ...The HP 10BII has a well written manual, including examples on using the function. HP has the manual available on-line on their website for the inevitable time that the user needs it and has lost the original. While there are...

Adequate, even good, but certainly not the best ever.
To be certain, this is a good calculator, and it is a decent value at this price, but not even HP would say it's the best ever.I'd much rather be purchasing the HP 17BII - with it's expanded functions, but this will certainly do 95% or more of the financial functions I need it to do. The 17BII has some added features which admittedly are not requirements (Date, Time, Appointment) but I do strongly prefer the menu options on the 17BII and the programming function. To address a couple concerns mentioned here:1. Yes, the calculator will round .275 to .28 -- if you have it set to display only two digits right of the decimal. That's what it should do. You can, however, easily set the display to three digits or whatever degree of significant digits you wish.2. I have checked interest rate calculations and all I ahve done work out fine. Perhaps the problem mentioned here has been addressed. The 12C is a better, more capable calculator. But the 12C also requires one to...

Great replacement filter for Craftsman shop-vac
As per an earlier review, I too have a 16 gallon Craftsman shop vac that utilizes a "red-stripe" filter. The vac is about 2 + years old so I was probably due for new filter. Even though the measurements of this replacement filter are slightly different than the Craftsman original filter, this replacement fit just fine, but did require that I use the original cap from the old filter instead of the one provided so it could be secured the the appropriate filter location on the vacuum. No problem - it fit just fine. I am very happy with this product and would definitely buy one again versus paying an outrageous amount to buy one from Sears.

Fit perfectly
This fits "OLDER" model Ridgid Vac's ( circa 1999). I had a hard time finding one locally so I checked Amazon and happened across this filter. Perfect fit.I have noticed most folks that give negative reviews really don't do the proper research to actually understand what they are buying and end up blaming the site or seller for their own ignorance.

Fits Craftsman 16 gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum
I have a Craftsman, 16 gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum. It came with a flexible filter that's open on both top and bottom. A metal cap with a hole drilled through the center and a plastic nut also came with the unit. This filter slides over a plastic frame inside the vacuum designed to keep it in place. The metal cap secures the bottom of the filter and the hole fits over a threaded knob on the plastic frame. The nut secures this in place. That's how the original filter is used. The replacement filter is open on one end, but already has a metal cap on the bottom. However, there's no hole in the middle. In addition, the new filter is longer than the original one from Sears. At first I thought I'd need to drill a hole in the new filter so it could fit over the threaded knob on the vacuum. But it turns out the replacement filter fits snugly over the plastic frame and stays in place once it is pushed all the way on. Plus, since the new filter is longer than the original, the...

An acceptable and unimpressive HP upgrade
I have purchased for myself, the HP17bII+ (call it 17B2+), a new toy, for work, leisure and experimentation during the X'mas holidays.MY FIRST OUT OF BOX IMPRESSION,is sadly, that HP has really compromised the build quality of its financial/business calculator range by outsourcing its manufacturing to OEMs.Cosmetically, the new sleek case design looks nice but its rubber-plastic(?) feel really softened up and "cheapened" the 17B2+ vis-a-vis its predecessor.Although "product feel" is very subjective thing but I suppose every faithful HP calculator owner would tell HP that this is PARAMOUNT to their continued patronage of the HP financial calculator line. The handsome leather-like carrying case which accompanies the HP17B+ package won't make it look as professional as the solidly built as the 17bII or the rival made TI BA2+ professional, nevertheless it is a welcomed bundle.MAJOR HARDWARE IMPROVEMENT of the LCD DISPLAY is a...

Manual Hp 12c

Note that the HP-12C (and other HP calculators) appeal to a fairly narrow range of users–financial professionals (12C and 12C Platinum) and programmers and scientists (15C). The first thing many people noticed about the HP iPhone apps was the price–at $15 for the HP 12C Financial Calculator (and $20 for the 12C Platinum and $30 for the 15C), these programs aren’t cheap. When Hewlett-Packard released iPhone versions of its classic calculators, including the 12C (along with the 12C Platinum and 15C), it just made sense for me to take the HP-12C for a spin through our review cycle. Through it all, one particular piece of gear was always at my side, ready and willing to help with the trickiest of financial calculations: my Hewlett-Packard HP-12C financial calculator. The iPhone version is actually a bit better than just a clone of the original, though, because HP includes a simplified portrait-mode calculator (the 12C is a landscape-mode device). However, they are full-fledged replacements for physical devices that are still sold today–$70 for the 12C and $80 for the 12C Platinum. If you’ve not used this method of data entry before, you’ll have a bit of learning to do. ). The iPhone version of the HP-12C is a near carbon copy of the actual machine. what appears on the screen then is a photographic reproduction of the actual HP-12C calculator, complete with the gold-brown-orange-blue color scheme that made the original so…endearing. The real power of the HP-12C is found when you rotate your iPhone to landscape mode.
